How to Name an LLC

An LLC (limited liability company) is one of the most popular ways to set up a small business. Choosing the name is one of the first steps in forming one, and LLC names come with a few rules that a regular brand name doesn’t.

Common LLC Naming Rules

Rules vary by state, so always confirm on your Secretary of State’s website. Most states share these basics:

  • The name must include “LLC,” “L.L.C.” or “Limited Liability Company” (some states accept abbreviations like “Ltd. Liability Co.”).
  • It must be distinguishable from other businesses already registered in that state.
  • It usually can’t include words implying it’s a bank, insurance company or government agency unless you’re licensed.
  • Some words, like “University” or “Attorney,” may require extra approval.

Legal Name vs. Brand Name

Your LLC’s legal name and the name customers see don’t have to be the same. Many owners form a simple LLC like “Bekyan Ventures LLC” and then operate under one or more brand names with a DBA (doing business as) filing. That’s handy if you plan to run several businesses or websites under one company.

Next Steps

Search your state’s business entity database, check the domain, and search trademarks. Many states let you reserve a name for a period while you prepare your filing.
